Local SEO: 7 steps to get your shop on Google Maps
How to optimise your Google Business Profile so your shop, restaurant, spa or clinic shows up when people search nearby — a guide for local business owners.
For a business with a physical location, most new customers start with a search like “coffee shop near me” or “dentist in District 3”. The first thing they usually see is Google’s map pack — and your position in it is something you can improve, for free.
1. Create and verify your Google Business Profile
Go to Google Business Profile, create a listing using the exact name on your shop sign, and complete verification. Unverified profiles are barely shown at all.
2. Choose the right primary category
Your primary category is the single most important signal. A bakery should choose “Bakery” rather than “Grocery store”. Add secondary categories if you offer several services.
3. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent
Your name, address and phone number (NAP) must be identical on Google, your website, Facebook and online directories. Even small differences make Google trust your listing less.
4. Add real photos and update them regularly
Show your shopfront, interior, products and team. Profiles with fresh photos tend to get more calls and direction requests.
5. Ask for reviews and reply to them
Ask regular customers to leave a review, and reply to every review — negative ones included — politely and specifically.
6. Post updates every week
Google Posts let you share promotions and new products. They also signal that your business is open and active.
7. Link to an SEO-friendly website
A website with a dedicated page for each service, a clearly stated address and an embedded map will strengthen your Google Maps rankings.
